12 Stress Busters

    next——
7. Press “play”. The power of sound to alter and elevate our moods has been widely documented. If you put on your favorite song, or any song for that matter, you will feel differently at the end of that song.

8. Get steamed. Brew a cup of peppermint tea and place it on a table in front of you. Leon over and create a tent around the cup with your arms and head, breathing in this invigorating natural scent. Then, drink up.

9. Roll your eyes. Tired eyes can cause mental strain, so give those babies a break. Roll both eyes to the left and right, up and down, and then in full circles, repeating in each direction. Close your eyes, rubbing your palms together until they’re warm. Place gently over your closed eyes.

10. Knock knock, who’s there? Sit upright in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. With closed fists gently tap around your head in circular motions. Breathe slowly and deeply. This improves concentration and relieves headaches.

11. Brew a cup of chamomile tea with two teabags. Chamomile has been used for centuries to treat nervousness and insomnia. Drink the tea, and when the teabags cool so that they are just warm to the touch place use them as eye compresses.

12. Take a shower. The water pounding on your head stimulates your brain cells and gets you into a new “head space”.

12 Stress Busters

12 Stress Busters (6 before)

1. Take a “vacation”. Close your eyes and envision a place where you feel safe and relaxed--- is could be your favorite beach or under the covers in your bed. Allow yourself to really “be” there, experiencing what makes this place special to you. Breathe it in, open your eyes and take it with you.

2. Roar like a lion! Scrunch up your face and squeeze your whole body tight, then release everything wide with a sound, sticking your tongue out as far as your can. This alleviates tension, plus you’ll feel so silly you might even laugh.

3. Decorate your space with fresh flowers. Symbolizing life and beauty, flowers are an angel for all the senses. If you feel like getting more ambitions, buy a plant. Gardening is very therapeutic in the treatment of depression, and although one plant isn’t exactly a garden, it’s a start.

4. Give yourself a neck message, rolling your knuckles over any painful spots. Better yet, get your mom or a friend to do it for you.

5. Meditate on the breath. As you inhale, think “breathing in”, and as you exhale, think “breathing out”. Try this for five minutes, when your mind wanders just return to the breath.

6. Stretch your legs. If possible, go outside and take a brief walk. The change of scenery, the fresh air, and the circulation of blood in your body will perk you up instantly.

Unique Traditions from UK

High Tea

Although this British tradition always has more upscale connotations, high tea was first enjoyed by the English working class during the 1700s. This ritual began as a practical attempt to stave off hunger pangs between breakfast and supper, as eating just two daily meals was common at the time. It was called”high” tea because it was usually taken sitting atop stools in a tea shop or standing at a counter or buffet table. The fare was substantial and included the newly-invented “sandwich”, as well we Cornish pasties, Welsh rabbit, Scotch woodcock, and a variety of bread, rolls, and other meat and fish dishes. Today, high tea has become a more elegant and popular ritual that is practiced in fine hotels and restaurants around the world.

Boxing Day

This holiday, which is observed on December 26, is a unique part of the Christmas season in Great Britain, as well as other Commonwealth nations. Boxing Day stems from a tradition that began in the Middle Ages more than 800 years ago. On this day, English churches would open their “alms box” and distribute its contents to needy members of the community. It was also a day for servants to celebrate the holidays with their families, having usually worked the day before. Today, Boxing Day is one of the twenty-two paid holidays received by most working Brits. Most people now spend Christmas Day with their family and reserve Boxing Day for exchanging gifts with friends. Although the government shuts down for the day, cinemas and theatres are open.

Queen’s Telegram

In the United States, if you make it to the ripe old age of 101 or 102, Willard Scott will wish you happy birthday on national television. In England, the queen herself will send her congratulations. This fairly new custom is known as “the Queen’s Telegram” and assures centenarians that they will receive a birthday telegram from the queen on their one-hundredth birthday. The telegram is so coveted by some Brits that one 98-year-old woman was recently proven to have faked her age by two years just to receive the telegram.

Changing of the Guard

One of Britain’s most well-known traditions occurs every morning at 11:30 outside of Buckingham Palace, one of the queen’s three official residences, from April to October (and every other day in the winter). This stately ritual is, in essence, a shift change between groups of officers assigned to guarding the palace and is a military custom practiced by most palace guards in Europe. Famed for their stoicism, the guard typically draws huge crowds of tourists. The yellow flags that are exchanged between the two guards are called “The Royal Standard”, and historically were used to identify the king’s position as he marched into battle with his army.
